Beth's Picks of the Week

I'm currently teaching an exceedingly interesting online course. It's an advanced how-to writing class.

All is going super, I see exceptional writing talent... except one thing haunts me: Despite their drive, despite the obvious talent, very few of these aspiring freelancers know how to land paying assignments.

I know the feeling very well. As a card carrying introvert, someone who would rather die than make a cold call, a person who prefers to concentrate on creativity rather than marketing, I finally whittled out a freelance writing career that more than pays the bills. And I share all my drop dead easy strategies in my first two nonfiction titles.

So in honor of all my incredible students, I've bundled the two volumes together and slashed the price to an unheard of level.

All the while we struggle to exist in the magical worlds create inside our own minds.

An Insight Into The Power of Your Mindset

An excerpt from the June issue of Creative Mindset Newsletter. http://filbertpublishing.com/creative.html

You possess the power to alter reality for everyone who reads your writing. It's just a matter of building your mindset one step at a time.

It's not as difficult at all.

One secret to a healthy mindset is to focus on your successes, big and small. Celebrate every time you conquer a difficult task.

Have you finished a stellar article? Sit back and feel great. Enjoy the feeling of a job well done.

Celebrate every victory. Allow yourself to physically feel yourself moving one step closer to your ultimate goal. Allow each little triumph to build your self confidence.

Never look at the humongous task ahead, instead keep one eye fixed on your goal while the other enjoys the satisfaction of all the steps you've already taken towards that goal. Acknowledge that few people on earth have the tenacity and skills that you've developed to get where you are today.

Just think about all the books you've studied. How many journal entries have you slaved over? How many hours have you cooled your heels while drafting the perfect, most succinct paragraph you've ever written? How much have you invested in mentoring, resource materials, and seminars?

How many writers even care about such things?

The very fact that you're reading this tells me a lot about the drive you have to succeed. It tells me much about the seriousness you bring to your career. It also tells me an awful lot about your chances for success. Those writers who actively work towards success are most certainly more apt to achieve it.

It's that simple.

Build on every single success. Acknowledge the set-backs (we all experience them) and move on. Each step brings you closer to your goal.

Totally accept yourself and your talents where they are right now.

We've all felt it. That nagging feeling of inadequacy when we run into a fellow writer who we feel is “better” than us.

Get over it. You don't have time for trivial crud like that.

Your writing talent is exactly where it ought to be at this point in your career.

Want to become a better communicator? Then become a better communicator. Want to write perfect prose? Never gonna happen. But you can work on it. Your talent isn't a solid piece of marble. It's a living, breathing being; fully alive. It's something you nurture and allow to grow

Read any famous author. Check out their first book, then read their... say... 35th published piece. You'll find tremendous growth both in the storyline as well as communication skills. Give your own talent that same room to grow. Heck, I read my first few issues of Writing Etc. and think, “I can't believe I wrote this cr*p.”

But given time, talent will mature. Give your skills the same breathing space.

Understand that “you” are not your mistakes. There is no such thing as failure... only feedback.

A writing career is truly a fabulous adventure. Treat it as such. Enjoy the ride. After all, this is your life. It may as well be the wild ride you've always dreamed it could be.

'Til next time,

Beth
