Submissions to Filbert Publishing
Dear Author,
Getting published is tough. But what’s
tougher is getting your book sold by bookstores. I remember
when Beth’s first book, The Almach hit the market. The
clerk typed in the ISBN and a big red flag filled the
screen.
"Sorry," the clerk said, "We can’t special
order this."
"Why not?"
"Publisher doesn’t have
friendly terms."
That was that. After all our hard work. After
all the angst of finding a reputable publisher who used
Ingram’s as their wholesaler, we still couldn’t get our book
into bookstores.
We knew that scenario had to change and we
knew we’d change it.
After a lot of research, time and investment
of capital, we’ve come up with a pretty cool publishing
model.
We chose to use the best of the traditional
publishing methods—the distribution, wholesaling, pricing
structure—and incorporate them with the innovations of digital
technology.
What this means to you is this: we’ve found a
way to print our books economically, and offer wholesalers,
distributors, and bookstores a fair discount.
We’re also a no-fee-ever traditional
publisher who prints many of our titles locally
using as earth-friendly materials in every book
we produce.
That's the cool news.
The not-as-cool news for you is this: we're
very choosy about the authors we work with. If marketing gives
you the hives, contact someone else. If you don't understand
the power of an emotionally charged sales message, please
move on.
We work together with our authors to help
them sell as many books as they can. But we can't sell your
books without your help.
So, if you're the kind of writer who'd
rather spend an afternoon crafting a perfect phrase rather than
jump into this big messy world and have a blast pushing your
latest work... well, you'd probably enjoy working with a slower
paced company.
If you're passionate about your work, if you
believe that you've got an incredible manuscript that writers
will scramble over themselves to buy, shoot us an
e-mail.
If you've written something that gives you
goose bumps, we just may take a look at it.
If you decide to query us, here’s what you
need to do:
If you’ve written an awesome manuscript that
freelance writers would find interesting, feel
free to query us. Our address is:

You can also e-mail your queries to this
e-mail address:

Please note, due to the proliferation of
spam and the automatic deleting our filters sometimes
does, we cannot guarantee that we'll receive your
e-mail query. Your best bet if you want an (almost)
guaranteed response is to use the snail mail
address.
Also, due to an overflow of
manuscripts, we’re closed to all submissions until the end
of 2007.
But be aware: we reject over to 99
percent of incoming manuscripts. Biggest reason? Most incoming
queries don't match our editorial guidelines. Nope. We don't
publish books on cats. We don't publish science texts either.
Just books for writers and a very, very, very small
number of fiction titles. Period.
I look forward to hearing from
you.
Sincerely,
Maury Erickson, Director of Acquisitions and
Distribution
