Notes from Minnesota
I’m keeping ‘er short today. Terrible cold. I’m never sick and I’m definitely not a “graceful” cold sufferer.
I think I may have consumed a few too many antihistamines last night and am paying the price today.
Luckily for me, I’m keeping this issue of Writing Etc. in good hands.
My dear friend (and fellow Chix member, more on that in a bit) Victoria Rosenthal is not only a fantastic novelist, she’s also a wizard when it comes to marketing those little gems.
She’s graciously allowed me to heist one of her articles outlining how she so effectively markets her work.
So enjoy! And I’m off to the Lazee Boy so I can rest my ten gallon head. L
Talk later,
Beth

Marketing Your Writing with Passion
Victoria Rosendahl

How many times have you heard that you must be a great storyteller in order to harvest the kind of results you need from your queries? And how many times have you sat in your office wondering how to do that?
There’s no magic storytelling software that…simply by inserting a computer code…gives you the instant rapport you seek with your audience. You must turn into a skilled “passion market” writer for that.
Let’s start with the definition of a “passion marketer.” A passion marketer is any person or entity selling a product or service that can use drama to elicit potent and zealous emotion to increase sales, leads, and acceptance letters.
For instance, fundraising is a “passion market” that can greatly benefit from drama. Descriptive detail like what an animal looked like -- right down to eye color -- will help the audience better identify with the plight of a homeless, neglected or abused animal.
The insurance industry is also a “passion market”. Imagine tapping into the deep core of emotion after describing the devastation of losing your home -- with nothing left but a family photo or two sticking out of ankle deep mud -- in the wake of a powerful and
catastrophic hurricane.
The power of a good story and the emotion it stirs
is the hidden treasure of the passion marketer
Think for a moment. What are you passionate about? What stirs you so much you’d do anything -- short of committing a crime -- to get it?
Maybe you love collecting 18th-century American antiques. Every dent in a metal ware bowl or scratch on a painted sideboard and hutch reminds you of the sacrifices made by those who came before us.
Or how about competing each year in the “World's Best Chili” contest? You spend 11 months perfecting the secret blend of spices that gives your chili that one-of-a-kind mix of heat and sweet.
Sometimes it’s past midnight before you scrub the stain out of your favorite pot (the one with the broken handle), scoop dark, rich coffee into the Mr. Coffee, and pad up the stairs -- careful to miss that creak on the fourth tread that will wake the whole house.
Perhaps cars rev your personal engine. You’d drive three hours in a blizzard to buy the right hood ornament for that 1968 Goat you’re restoring -- from a fellow enthusiast, dying of lung cancer, who couldn’t stand to see his cherished possession go to anyone but another GTO fan.
Do you see what happened in the last three paragraphs? I painted a word picture on blank canvas using the five senses: sight, smell, hearing, touch and taste. That picture elicits emotion by relating a situation. And that emotion will lead you home to your audience.
You’ve established rapport when a reader (and editors who are considering your query) can say, “I know exactly what you mean!”
Rapport with your reader is the key to
success
That passion, that drive, that deep-rooted desire is what makes your message read like a best-seller. It’s the critical ingredient that sets best-sellers apart from average manuscripts. And if it’s missing, you’ll never see truly tremendous acceptance rates from your queries.
Why does dramatic writing work? Because whether it’s a fundraising appeal, a subscription renewal, or a query, everyone loves a good story.
It’s how you tell the story that sets you apart from
the crowd --
like wearing a red suit in a sea of grey pinstripe
Crafting a proposal or query that reads like a best seller -- combining passion with the intricacy of a well-told tale -- is what powerful drama does for your writing. It’s writing that reaches out to the heart and soul of an audience and returns with maximum response rates, sales, and ROI.
