Think It’ll Take Forever To Earn The Big Bucks As A Writer?
Think again.
Hey Freelancer:
How many times has this happened to you?
You slave over an article… researching,
reading, outlining, writing, editing, searching for the right market.
By the time you add everything together, you’ve probably got around ten hours
invested in every article you write. And that’s not counting crafting the brilliant query you need to
sell the piece. You can easily spend an hour or two tooling a query that may or may not hit pay
dirt.
And if that article's accepted, you'll probably have to make editorial changes to
it.
How long'll that take? Couple more hours? Day or so?
Thing is, you never know.
But let's get back on track: the saddest part of this scenario is that after all your work, you can expect
to get paid anywhere from zip, zero, nada (ah, but you get that big, sweet byline, right?!?)
to an average of around 50 bucks for that article. And that's if you’re lucky.
Just try calculating how many articles you’d have to produce each week to make
a half-way decent wage on that project.
Heck, I'd hate to calculate how many articles you'd have to write just to earn
the current measly minimum wage.
It’s discouraging. It feels brutal.
After all your hard work, no matter how hard you try, it feels like
writers don’t make much money. And to make matters worse, it feels as though
many writers believe that they ought to live in dingy hovels while "suffering" for their
craft.
And just a couple facts seem to bear out this stereotype. I’ll bet you
didn’t know that most part-time freelance writers earn only a few thousand dollars per year.
A few thousand bucks! Try paying the bills with those lousy numbers.
The wage outlook isn’t much better for most full-time writers either —
especially if you live in a rural area. Read salary reports (on a site such as http://salary.com) for newbie
newspaper reporters and you’ll find out that many of them qualify for federal food-stamp money.
That just makes me angry because it doesn’t have to be that way.

It's Easier Than You Think…
